Vision of the Program:

The program is dedicated to produce graduates as professionals, effective thinkers, researchers and writers with advancing cultural awareness, diversity, and ethical responsibility through the study of literature, creative writing, and English language education through innovative teaching, research, and service.

Mission of the Program:

M1Produce graduates with knowledge of the content and methods of literary studies and English language education to contribute to their workplaces and communities throughout their lives as lifelong learners
M2Facilitate innovative teaching, scholarship and research that promote cultural awareness, diversity and ethical responsibility through the study of literature, language and general education.
M3Develop graduates’ analytical, academic, creative, and technological communication abilities in order to develop ethical global citizenship.

Objectives of the Program Offering Entity:

To produce capable graduates with strong humanities background and communication skills, such as oral, written, and computer communication skills for a variety of careers where writing and research are essential, such as teaching, curriculum design, educational consulting, publishing, journalism, advertising, project management, and public relations.

Structure of the Curriculum

a) Duration of the Program (Year and Semester):

The Program duration is 4 (Four) years spread over 8 (Eight) semesters. There will be two semesters in an academic year: Spring (January-June) and Fall (July- December).

Admission Requirements:

Without any exception, every applicant who intends to pursue B.A. in English at United International University (henceforth UIU) must fulfil the admission requirements as laid down by UIU. A higher secondary certificate or its equivalent in science, arts, commerce, or other fields of study is the basic educational requirement. The related requirements for getting admitted into this programme are in the following:

  1. Candidates having a minimum GPA of 2.5/2nd division/equivalent grade in SSC and HSC or equivalent public examinations are eligible to apply for getting admitted into this programme. Students with GPA 2.00 in any examination either SSC or HSC; however, they must have a minimum GPA of 6.00 totalling the GPA of both the examinations.
  2. O-level students must have completed a minimum of 5 subjects with Average Grade Point of 2.50 or above and A-level students a minimum of 2 subjects with Average Grade Point of 2.00 or above (scale A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1)
  3. The students, who are sons/daughters of freedom fighters, will be eligible for getting admission if they have a minimum GPA of 5.00 totalling the GPA of S.S.C. and H.S.C. examinations. Such students, however, have to submit the copy of authenticated certificate as the proof of his/her father/mother’s identity as a freedom fighter.
  4. However, applicants will be evaluated on the basis of both previous academic achievement and UIU admission test score. Candidates must have acceptable score in UIU admission test. Moreover, a student whose IELTS band score (academic) is 6.0 or equivalent Score in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) not less than 550 in the TOEFL Paper Based Test or
    80 in the TOEFL Internet Based Test or its equivalent band score might be exempted from taking UIU admission test (written and oral). Categorically, all the students must appear before a personal interview as a part of the admission requirements. 

Admission test is not required for GPA 5.00 holders in H.S.C./equivalent level of exams and credit transferred students for getting admission to an undergraduate program.

Course Waiver/Transfer Policy

A student must have obtained at least a grade of ‘B’ or equivalent in a similar course from any prestigious university/institution for course waiver/transfer. A student may be allowed maximum course waiver up to 60 credit hours (20 courses) based on the recommendation of the course equivalence committee.

Total minimum credit requirement to complete the program

  • For this 4-year B.A. in English, a total of 123 credits are required.

Minimum CGPA requirements for Undergraduate:

B.A. in English degree requirements are provided in the following:

(a) Completion of minimum 41 courses (123 credit hours)

(b) Completion of the dissertation work with at least a “C” grade

(c) Passing all courses separately and maintaining a minimum CGPA of 2.00

Degree is not conferred necessarily on fulfilment of the above conditions. The university
reserves the right to refuse the award of a degree on disciplinary and other grounds.

Maximum academic years of completion:

For the completion of B.A. in English, 4-year is required, but, if necessary, a candidate must have to obtain the degree within a maximum 7 (Seven) years.
